Personalising a small device the right way

Small devices leave little room for error. A skin a millimetre too wide lifts at the edges, and one that covers a button or port is irritating. Here is how to plan yours.

Materials, shapes and sizes

Thin, flexible vinyl is the usual choice because it adds almost no bulk and follows the gently rounded edges of a small case. Matte finishes resist fingerprints and feel less slippery; gloss makes photographs and bright artwork pop.

Clear vinyl is useful when you want a design to float over a coloured or metal back, and a laminate helps a skin cope with keys and coins in a pocket.

Measuring and fitting a device skin

Measure the flat face of the device with a steel ruler or digital calipers rather than trusting a product listing, as models and generations differ. Note the corner radius and the position of any screen, wheel, buttons, ports and headphone socket.

Leave a small margin of around a millimetre inside the edge, because a skin that wraps over a tight edge tends to lift. Never cover vents, charging contacts or the screen unless the design is meant to be see-through.

Wipe the case with a dry lint-free cloth so it is free of dust and grease, line up one edge first and smooth outwards to push out any air.
