Choosing stickers for metal and metal-look finishes

Start by deciding which matters more: how the sticker looks, or how it copes with the metal surface underneath. Most jobs need a balance of both.

Why choose metal-effect stickers?

Engraved or etched metal plates look substantial, but they take time to make and need screws or rivets to fix. A metal-effect sticker gives a similar brushed or polished appearance and is simply pressed into place.

That makes them practical for product badges, equipment nameplates and control panel labels, where a precise industrial look matters but the budget and timeline do not suit machined parts.

For bare metal surfaces, the sticker’s job is different: it needs to grip smooth steel or aluminium, cope with temperature changes and stay legible on a reflective background.

Measure the flat area available and avoid wrapping stickers over tight bends, welds or raised edges, where the film is under strain and more likely to lift.

Applying stickers to metal

Metal is generally a good surface for adhesive, provided it is clean. Machine oils, fingerprints and polishing compounds all weaken the bond, so wipe the area with a degreaser or isopropyl alcohol and let it dry.

Temperature matters. Cold metal in an unheated workshop or outdoors in winter can stop adhesive flowing into the surface, so apply at room temperature where possible. For parts that get hot, such as engine covers or exhausts, tell us first, as not every sticker suits high heat.

Bare steel that is prone to rust should be treated or painted before a sticker is applied, otherwise corrosion can creep beneath the edges.
