Rules on size, colour and display
L plates in Great Britain have to meet set requirements on size and colour, and must be displayed on the front and rear of the vehicle when a learner is driving. Do L plates have to be a certain size?
Yes. L plates in Great Britain must meet set size and colour requirements. Check the current guidance on GOV.UK and give us the exact dimensions, and we will print to those figures.
Are P plates compulsory?
In Great Britain P plates are optional for new drivers. Northern Ireland has its own rules for newly qualified drivers, so check the guidance that applies where you live.
Should L plates come off when a qualified driver uses the car?
It is sensible to remove or cover learner signs when a learner is not driving, which is why magnetic and static cling formats are so popular. Check The Highway Code for current advice.
Can a driving school add its logo to a learner sign?
Many instructors do. Make sure the learner element still meets the size and colour requirements, and put your branding beside it rather than over it.
Will a magnetic L plate fall off?
On a clean, flat steel panel a magnetic sign holds firmly. It will not stick to plastic bumpers or aluminium, and the edges should be checked before each drive.
Can I display L plates inside the windows?
