Here is what happens to your order at each stage, and what you can do to help it go smoothly.
Why it helps to understand sticker manufacturing
Most problems with sticker orders start long before printing: a low-resolution logo, text too close to a cut line or a material that suits the design but not the surface. Understanding the process shows you where those problems come from.
It also explains why certain questions get asked. When a manufacturer asks where the stickers will go, it is because that answer decides the material, the adhesive and whether a laminate is needed.
Finally, it makes timelines realistic. Each stage takes time, and knowing the order of events helps you plan launches and events around production.
The stages of sticker production
A typical custom sticker order moves through these steps:
- Artwork check – resolution, colour mode, bleed and text size are reviewed.
- Cut path and proof – the outline is set and a PDF proof is sent for approval.
- Printing – the approved design is printed onto the chosen material.
- Finishing – gloss, matte or protective laminate is applied where specified.
- Cutting – stickers are cut to shape as singles, sheets or rolls.
- Packing and dispatch – orders are packed and sent for UK-wide delivery.
Materials, shapes and how they affect production
The material decides much of the route. Printed vinyl is printed and then cut, while cut lettering is produced from solid coloured vinyl, with the unwanted areas removed by hand. Metallic, clear and holographic films each need artwork prepared for how ink sits on them.
Shape matters too. Circles and rectangles are straightforward, whereas a contour cut following a detailed illustration needs a carefully prepared cut path and sensible borders.
Format is the last decision in the chain. Singles are cut through the backing, sheets are kiss cut, and rolls are cut and wound in sequence.
Getting your files right for manufacturing
Artwork should be CMYK at 300 DPI at the size it will print, or vector. Add bleed – extra background beyond the cut line – so that no thin white edge appears if the cut shifts slightly.
Keep important text and details a few millimetres inside the cut line. If you are producing a contour-cut sticker, you can supply the cut path yourself or let us create it around your design.
Once you approve the proof, that file is what gets manufactured, so treat approval as the final checkpoint for spelling, sizing and colour.
How well-made stickers support your brand
Manufacturing quality is visible in small details: clean edges, colours that match across a batch and stickers that lift easily from the backing. Those details tell customers that your brand pays attention.
Consistency matters over time as well. When the same approved file is used for repeat orders, stickers from next year’s run should sit comfortably alongside this year’s.
Why businesses choose AStickerPrinting as their sticker manufacturer
We explain what each stage needs from you and raise issues at the artwork stage, where they are simple to fix. Your stickers are only manufactured from a PDF proof you have approved, and production takes 10–12 working days from that point.

Sticker Manufacturers questions, answered
What happens after I place a sticker order?
Your artwork is reviewed, a cut path is prepared and a PDF proof is sent. Once you approve it, the stickers are printed, finished, cut, packed and dispatched.
Why do I need bleed on my artwork?
Bleed is extra background extending past the cut line. Cutting has a small tolerance, and bleed prevents a thin unprinted edge appearing if the cut lands fractionally outside the design.
Can I supply my own cut line?
Yes. Supply the cut path as a separate named layer in a vector file. If you do not have one, we can create an outline around your artwork for you to check on the proof.
Is lamination applied before or after printing?
After. The design is printed first, and a clear laminate is then applied over the ink to protect it before the stickers are cut.
Are cut vinyl letters made differently from printed stickers?
Yes. Cut lettering is produced from solid coloured vinyl rather than printed, and the waste vinyl around each letter is removed before transfer tape is applied.
Can I change my design once production has started?
Changes are easiest before proof approval. Once production is under way, the approved file is being used, so please check your proof carefully.
How long does manufacturing take?
Allow 10–12 working days for production after proof approval, plus delivery time. The quicker the proof is signed off, the sooner production begins.
