Handling label guide

Choosing orientation and handling stickers

A handling label has a few seconds to register with someone lifting a box. Contrast, arrow size and position on the carton do almost all of the work.

Why use This Way Up stickers?

Liquids, glassware, electronics, plants, cakes and assembled furniture can all be damaged when a box travels on its side or upside down. A clear arrow does not make a parcel indestructible, but it gives handlers the information they need to treat it properly.

Printed labels also look far more professional than arrows drawn in marker pen. Customers notice the difference when a box arrives, and warehouse staff respond better to a consistent, recognisable label.

Custom printing lets you combine the arrow with extra instructions – ‘fragile’, ‘keep dry’ or ‘do not stack’ – on one sticker instead of several.

Who uses This Way Up stickers

Orientation labels are ordered by:

  • Online shops – candles, drinks, cosmetics and homeware sent by courier.
  • Bakeries and food producers – cakes and chilled items that must stay flat.
  • Manufacturers – machinery parts and fluid-filled components.
  • Removal and storage firms – boxes packed for house moves.
  • Garden centres and nurseries – plants shipped in cartons.
  • Exporters – crates and pallets travelling long distances.

Materials, formats and sizes

Most cartons are cardboard, and a paper label with a strong adhesive grips well and costs less material than vinyl. For plastic crates, wrapped pallets or boxes stored somewhere damp, vinyl copes better with moisture.

Rolls are the practical choice for anyone labelling more than a handful of boxes a day, as they feed from a dispenser and peel quickly. Sheets suit smaller shops packing orders at a kitchen table.

Arrow labels on a shoebox-sized parcel can be modest, while crates and large cartons need something big enough to see from the other side of a loading bay. Red, orange or fluorescent colours stand out against brown board.

Where to place handling labels

Put arrows on at least two adjacent sides, and ideally all four, so the label is visible however the box is stacked. Point them firmly towards the top and keep them near the upper edge.

Avoid covering the courier label, barcode or tape seam. A label wrapped around a corner can crease and lift, so keep each sticker on a single face.

Remember that carriers set their own handling terms. Stickers communicate your request clearly but are not a substitute for good internal packaging, so pad fragile items well.

How branded handling labels help your business

A handling sticker carrying your logo reinforces your brand at the moment the parcel is unpacked, and it quietly signals that you care about how the order arrives.

Fewer damaged deliveries also means fewer replacements, refunds and disappointed reviews – a practical return on a very small label.

FAQs

This Way Up Stickers questions, answered

Do couriers have to follow This Way Up stickers?

Stickers make your handling request clear, but each carrier sets its own terms on what it can accommodate. Check with your courier and always pack fragile contents to survive being tipped.

Should I choose paper or vinyl handling labels?

Paper labels suit dry cardboard cartons and grip the fibres of the board firmly. Choose vinyl for plastic crates, stretch-wrapped pallets or anything stored in damp conditions.

How many labels should go on each box?

At least two, on adjacent sides, so one is visible however the parcel sits. Many shippers place an arrow on all four sides of larger cartons.

Can you add our logo to This Way Up labels?

Yes. A small logo alongside the arrow keeps your branding on the parcel without weakening the instruction. Supply it as a vector file where possible.

Can the labels be on a roll?

Yes. Rolls work well with a dispenser on the packing bench. Let us know if your dispenser needs a particular core size.

What size should the arrows be?

Scale them to the box. Smaller parcels suit a compact label, while crates and large cartons need arrows that register from several metres away in a busy depot.

How long will my handling labels take?

Your labels go into production once the proof is approved and are typically ready in 10–12 working days. If you are running low on stock, reorder before the last roll starts.
