Preparing artwork for printing on glass

Most problems with window stickers begin at the artwork stage. Following the steps below gives you a file that prints cleanly and reads the right way round.

Why professional window sticker printing matters

Home-printed notices taped to glass curl in sunlight, fade quickly and look temporary. Printed vinyl or cling is made for windows, holds flat and keeps colours even across a large pane.

Getting the technical details right is what separates a window graphic that looks built-in from one that looks like an afterthought. Reversed text, washed-out colours and designs that disappear against the interior are all avoidable at the file stage.

Step one: measure the glass and choose the film

Measure the visible glass inside the frame, not the frame itself, and note any beading or seals the sticker must clear. For multi-pane windows, measure and label each pane.

Next, choose the film. White vinyl gives opaque, full-strength colour. Clear vinyl lets the glass show through, but printed colours on it look lighter and more translucent, especially with daylight behind them. Static cling suits temporary graphics that need to come down cleanly.

Decide which side of the glass the sticker will go on, as the next step depends on it.

Step two: set up artwork for glass

Supply artwork in CMYK at 300 DPI at the finished size, or as vector files, with text converted to outlines. Standard CMYK printing has no white ink, so white areas in a design on clear film will usually print as see-through; if you need solid white, choose white vinyl or ask us about your design.

For stickers applied to the inside of a window and read from outside, the print needs to face through the glass. You do not need to mirror the file yourself; just tell us the application side and we will prepare it correctly.

Keep important text a few millimetres inside the cut line, and mark any areas that must stay clear, such as a handle, lock or sensor.

Step three: proof, print and apply

Once the file is ready, we send a PDF proof showing size, cut line and reading direction. Check spelling, phone numbers and dimensions carefully, because approval starts production and the 10–12 working day turnaround.

When the stickers arrive, clean the glass with a lint-free cloth, apply in mild conditions and smooth from the centre outwards to push out air.
