Getting graphics onto your signboards

The board is the structure; the sticker is the message. Measuring properly, choosing the right vinyl and planning for the viewing distance will decide how professional the finished sign looks.

Why use stickers on sign boards?

Many businesses already have good boards – a sturdy steel A-board, framed panels on a fence or a fascia tray – but the graphics on them are faded, out of date or show a previous owner’s name. Replacing just the printed face is quicker and less wasteful than buying a whole new sign.

Stickers also make changing messages practical. A café can switch a summer menu board to a winter one, an estate agent can update a phone number, and a builder can rebrand site hoardings when a new project starts.

Because the artwork is printed digitally in full colour, photographs, gradients and detailed logos all reproduce, which is difficult and slow with hand painting.

Materials, sizes and finishes

Outdoor boards need vinyl, ideally with a laminate on top to protect the print from rain and abrasion. A matte laminate reduces reflections on boards facing the sun or under shop lights; gloss makes colours look richer.

Measure the flat printable area, not the frame, and tell us whether the sticker should run to the edge or sit inside a border. Large boards may need the graphic split into panels, which we can discuss when you request a quote.

For single-colour lettering on a coloured board, cut letters give a clean, painted appearance with no visible background film.

Applying stickers to a board

Boards must be clean, dry and free of old adhesive. Aluminium composite, painted metal and smooth plastic panels accept vinyl readily; rough timber, powder-coated textures and dusty surfaces do not, so check the finish before ordering.

For larger stickers, position the graphic with masking tape along the top edge, fold it back, peel a section of backing and smooth it outward with a squeegee. Working slowly from the centre helps push out air bubbles.
