Making stickers to sell

From illustration to sticker stock

Selling stickers is different from ordering them for your own use. Every design has to look good in a photo, survive being posted and feel worth its price in a customer’s hand.

Why use a professional sticker maker?

Home cutting machines are fine for a handful of tests, but printing a range to sell is another matter. Hand-cut edges drift, inkjet colours smudge when damp and paper stock curls. Buyers compare your stickers with everything else on their laptop, so finish quality matters.

Having your stickers made professionally means consistent cut lines, vinyl that copes with bottles and bags, and colours that match from the first sticker to the last. It also frees your evenings for drawing rather than trimming.

It is a sensible step once a design has proved popular. Many artists test demand with a small first run, then reorder the best sellers in larger quantities.

Sticker products creators commonly sell

Artists and sellers typically build ranges from:

  • Die-cut vinyl singles – one illustration, cut to its outline, for laptops and bottles.
  • Themed sticker sheets – planners, journals and collections of small motifs.
  • Holographic or foil editions – limited drops that feel collectable.
  • Order inserts – a small free sticker that makes a parcel memorable.
  • Market and convention stock – a spread of designs at different sizes.

Materials, shapes and sizes for a sticker range

Vinyl is the usual choice for stickers you sell, because customers expect them to cope with a water bottle. A gloss finish makes illustrations pop, while matte feels softer and photographs without glare. Holographic and foil films suit special editions.

Offer a small number of sizes rather than many. A consistent size across a collection looks tidy on a product page and makes pricing and packing simpler.

Sheets suit sets of tiny designs, and singles suit anything that will be stuck on its own.

Preparing illustrations for cutting

Die-cut stickers follow a cut line drawn around your artwork. A white or coloured border a few millimetres wide keeps the cut clean and stops thin elements such as whiskers, hair strands or lettering from tearing when peeled.

Avoid deep, narrow gaps between parts of a design. A cutter can follow them, but the sticker becomes fragile and hard to lift from its backing. Filling small gaps with the border colour usually solves it.

Supply artwork in CMYK at 300 DPI or as vectors. Bright on-screen colours, especially neon greens and pinks, may print slightly calmer, so check your proof on a well-lit screen.

How quality stickers help your shop

Stickers are frequently a customer’s first purchase from an artist. If that sticker peels cleanly, looks sharp and survives a washed bottle, they come back for prints, pins and bigger pieces.

Good stickers also promote you for free. Every laptop or notebook carrying your design is a small advert seen by classmates, colleagues and followers.

FAQs

Sticker Maker questions, answered

Can I sell stickers you print from my artwork?

Yes. Stickers printed from your own original artwork are yours to sell. If a design includes someone else’s characters, logos or brand names, you need the rights holder’s permission before we can print it.

What is the difference between die-cut and kiss-cut stickers?

Die-cut stickers are cut through the backing, so each one is a separate shaped piece. Kiss-cut stickers are cut through the vinyl only, leaving them on a larger backing sheet, which suits sets and sheets.

Can I order lots of designs in small quantities?

Tell us the number of designs and the quantity of each when you request a quote, and we will price the combination for you.

Which finish photographs best for an online shop?

Matte finishes reduce reflections, so they are easier to photograph under lights. Gloss makes colours look richer in the hand. Many sellers offer gloss for everyday designs and holographic for special editions.

Why does my sticker need a border?

A border strengthens the edge of a die-cut sticker. Without one, thin parts of an illustration can tear or lift when peeled from the backing.

Will my colours match my screen?

Screens glow, and print reflects light, so very bright colours can look a little softer on a sticker. Supplying CMYK files and checking the proof helps you avoid surprises.

How far ahead should I order for a market or convention?

Production takes 10–12 working days after your proof is approved, so work back from the event date and leave time for artwork changes and delivery.
