Design tips for making your own stickers

Good sticker design is about clarity at small sizes. Keep these principles in mind from the first sketch to the final file.

Why make your own stickers?

Designing your own stickers gives you complete creative control. You decide the style, the message and the shape, and the result reflects your personality or brand in a way a ready-made sticker cannot.

It is also a great way to test ideas. Artists try out new characters, small brands experiment with slogans, and groups create designs for a single event without a big commitment.

And it is satisfying. Seeing your own artwork printed, cut and stuck to a laptop or water bottle is one of the simplest creative wins there is.

What people design for themselves

DIY sticker designs often include:

  • Illustrations and characters – for sketchbooks, laptops and small merch runs.
  • Slogans and quotes – short phrases in bold lettering.
  • Hobby and club designs – badges for teams, societies and groups.
  • Gift and party stickers – personalised designs for celebrations.
  • Starter brand stickers – a first logo sticker for a new venture.

Materials, shapes and sizes for your design

Design with the final size in mind from the start. Set your canvas to the actual sticker dimensions and zoom out to 100% regularly to see how it will look in real life.

Think about the shape early. A design intended for die cutting needs a solid outline, while a design for a circle or square needs to fill that frame comfortably.

Material changes the look. White vinyl shows colours faithfully, clear vinyl lets the surface show through, and holographic film makes light colours shimmer. Choose the material before finalising colours.

Design rules that make stickers work

Contrast is everything. Dark on light or light on dark reads instantly; mid-tone text on a mid-tone background disappears. Squint at your design – if elements merge, increase the contrast.

Use fewer, bigger words. Choose a bold, simple typeface, keep lines of text short, and avoid thin scripts at small sizes. A thick outline around lettering or characters helps them stand out on any surface.

Set up files properly: CMYK colour, 300 DPI at full size or vector artwork, a little bleed beyond the edge and important details kept inside a safe margin. Convert text to outlines so fonts cannot change.

How your own designs build something bigger

A strong DIY sticker can become the seed of a brand or a creative following. Many illustrators start with a handful of designs and grow a recognisable style people collect.

For clubs and groups, a self-designed sticker gives members something to share, creating a sense of identity that a generic design would not.

FAQs

Make Your Own Stickers questions, answered

What software can I use to design stickers?

Any design software that exports high-resolution or vector files will work. Vector programs are ideal for logos and lettering, while raster programs suit painted or photographic artwork.

What file format should I send?

Vector files such as PDF, AI or EPS are preferred. High-resolution PNG or PDF at 300 DPI at full size also works. Use CMYK colour where possible.

How big should my text be?

Large enough to read from the distance the sticker will be seen. Bold, simple fonts stay readable at smaller sizes than thin or decorative ones. Print your design at full size at home to test.

What is bleed and do I need it?

Bleed is a small area of background that extends past the cut line so no white edge appears if the cut shifts slightly. It is recommended for designs with colour running to the edge.

Should I add an outline to my design?

An outline or border around characters and lettering helps them stand out and gives a cleaner cut for shaped stickers.

Will you fix problems in my artwork?

We review every file for free and explain anything that needs changing, such as low resolution or text too close to the edge, so you can adjust it before approving the proof.

How soon will my stickers arrive?

Printing takes 10–12 working days after you approve the proof, then your order is delivered.
