Materials, shapes and sizes

Vinyl is the default for kitchens because it does not absorb water or grease. A laminate adds protection wherever stickers are wiped daily, such as splashbacks, fridge doors and commercial kitchen signs.

Tile stickers are cut to the tile face, and cupboard labels are usually small rectangles or rounded tags. Clear stickers suit glass containers, while white vinyl keeps text readable on dark cabinets.

For pantry jars, size labels to the straight part of the jar, and choose vinyl if containers go through regular hand washing.

Heat, grease and food areas

Keep stickers away from direct heat. The wall right behind a hob, the area above a toaster and oven vents all get hotter than vinyl adhesive likes. Beside sinks and along worktops is usually fine.

Grease stops stickers sticking. Clean surfaces with a degreaser, rinse and dry thoroughly before applying, and check that painted cupboards or walls suit stickers, as removal can mark or lift some paints and wraps.
