Designing a product label with foil

Foil rewards restraint. Used on the right elements, it makes a label feel expensive; spread too widely, it makes practical information harder to read.

On a shelf, foil catches the light as a customer walks past, pulling the eye towards your product before they have registered the name. That movement of light is something flat print cannot imitate.

Print ingredients, allergens, volumes and contact details in solid ink, ideally dark on a light background, so they stay legible from any angle.

Set up foil areas on their own layer in your artwork as solid vector shapes, without gradients or shadows, and name the layer clearly so it is not confused with printed colour.
